The Farmers of Galson

SS Mary Jane (Below). This paddle Steamer was built in 1849 by James Matheson. The ship was sold in 1851as she couldn't cope with the Minch, another ship the Marquis of Stafford owned by the Duke of Sutherland was put in her place. This was the main mode of transport for Matheson and his farmers.  They sent all their wool to Glasgow on this boat for further transportation to the woollen mills of Yorkshire. They also exported barrels of salt fish, caste ewes and Cattle to the mainland using this boat.
