Lower Shader, a community shaped by migration, resilience, and ancient landscapes. Explore the stories that define this unique corner of our island

The Genesis of a New Village

Lower Shader, along with Siadar a Cladaich, Cuibh Totair, and Beagnigearraidh Farm, forms a significant part of this historic area. The modern village of Lower Shader emerged in 1827, coinciding with the construction of the road connecting Ness and Stornoway. This vital infrastructure project, known as the King's Highway or 'Rathad a Righ', prompted residents to relocate from older settlements to be closer to this new arterial route, laying the foundation for the community we know today. On the left we have Airidhantuim School built in 1888
