Melbost-Mid Borve: A Changing Landscape

 Mullach Mor Mhealboist or Inner Melbost/Ulbost Borve. The people who lived in Inner Melbost were Farm workers with their families. They were removed to outer Melbost or Na Builisgean in 1823 by the Seaforth's Chamberlain to reorganise the area into Crofts

Left Murdo Macleod [Murdley]  at 8 Melbost in 1924 with his horse and cart.  They moved from Carloway to Melbost in 1924.

The place was known as Ulbost Borve.  In 1810 the name was changed to Melbost

In the audio clip below, Donald MacLeod, Domhnuill Mhurachadh Charlabhaigh recounts the challenges he and his family encountered when they first arrived in the new village of Galson in 1924. His father secured a home at 8 Galson, while Donald embarked on the Metagama shortly after and spent many years in the USA before ultimately returning to Melbost Galson.
